Gloucestershire Long barrows

Gloucestershire has many ancient sites many of these sites are known as long barrows(Tumulis) and round barrows.   These barrows are the works of prehistoric man and can be found scattered across the county.  Other similar sites include stone circles and dwellings.

Rodmarton Long Barrow(Windmill Tump)

On Wednesday September 8th 2004 we paid a visit to the ancient barrow at Rodmarton in Gloucestershire.

Windmill Tump is situated in a field and can be seen from entering the field through a large gate.  There is parking available using a lay-by on the road just a couple of steps away.  The barrow is surrounded by a large wall which has fallen in places and has a main gate for access.  We took note of the surroundings and it appears this site is well looked after.  The barrow dates back to Neolithic times and has been excavated during the 19th century where 13 human remains were found.

We could only find 1 entrance that was visible however impossible to enter due to it being so low with a very narrow gap.  Like entrance holes on other barrows a large capstone was clearly visible.  The barrow has become overgrown in places with vegetation therefore not much detail could be seen.  A Winter visit would be better.
