Gloucestershire Long barrows

Gloucestershire has many ancient sites many of these sites are known as long barrows(Tumulis) and round barrows.   These barrows are the works of prehistoric man and can be found scattered across the county.  Other similar sites include stone circles and dwellings.

Nympsfield(Coaley Peak)

Nympsfield long barrow is situated in the grounds of the picnic site at Coaley peak near Selsley in Gloucestershire.

It is an open long barrow with a main passage and 2 side chambers.

The barrow dates back to Neolithic times and is one of many found across the county.

Photo 2 is a close up the barrow clearly showing the two chambers and main passage however the barrow has suffered vandalism over time.

The site around the barrow has changed too.

The Toots
The Toots long barrow is located on top of Selsley common in Gloucestershire overlooking the severn escarpment.

The barrow dates back to around 2000 BC and has been excavated several times in the past mainly during the 18th century.

The toots against the background horizon the dip on top of the mound is the result of excavations.

Like all barrows the toots would once have been clearly visible all round as they were not grass covered
